Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff

An armed robbery suspect was taken into custody after leading San Diego police on a dangerous pursuit that ended in a prolonged overnight standoff.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. on July 10, 2026, San Diego Police officers began pursuing a Toyota Prius driven by a suspect wanted in connection with an armed robbery near Mira Mesa Boulevard and Pacific Heights Boulevard.

During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly drove the wrong way on Interstate 5 for a short distance before officers discontinued the active chase and transitioned into tracking mode with the department’s ABLE helicopter.

The suspect later entered an industrial area, where officers deployed spike strips multiple times in an effort to stop the vehicle. The Prius eventually left the roadway before becoming blocked near 9514 Easter Way.

The driver then barricaded inside the vehicle, prompting a lengthy standoff. Armored vehicles were requested as officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect.

At approximately 1:40 a.m., officers deployed pepper balls into the vehicle. The suspect then surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

Investigators are also looking into whether the Toyota Prius involved in the pursuit had been stolen.

The investigation remains ongoing.
