Wrong-Way Driver Killed In Head-On 91 Freeway Crash

A wrong-way driver was killed and two other motorists suffered major injuries in a three-vehicle head-on collision Sunday morning on the 91 Freeway in Riverside.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on September 6, 2026, on the eastbound 91 Freeway west of University Avenue.

According to initial reports, the California Highway Patrol and Riverside Fire Department responded after receiving calls of a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

Shortly afterward, the wrong-way vehicle, described as a Ford Flex, collided head-on with two other vehicles.

Three people were initially treated as major-injury patients, with CPR performed on the driver of the Ford Flex. CHP later confirmed that the wrong-way driver was pronounced dead. The drivers of the other two vehicles were transported with major injuries. Preliminary information indicated that no passengers were inside the vehicles.

A small Chihuahua was also killed in the collision.

The eastbound 91 Freeway was shut down at 14th Street while CHP investigated the fatal crash.

Alcohol is suspected as a possible factor in the collision, according to preliminary information. The circumstances remain under investigation.
