Construction Worker Killed On Gulf Freeway
At approximately 11:00 p.m. on June 28, 2026, Houston Police responded to a fatal work zone incident on the southbound Gulf Freeway near the Dixie Farm Road exit.
According to investigators, a highway construction crew was setting up a lane closure when the incident occurred.
Police said a specialized impact-attenuator vehicle, commonly known as a “Scorpion truck,” was backing up as part of the lane closure operation when it struck one of the construction workers.
The worker was fatally run over and died at the scene.
Investigators said the driver told officers he was reversing cautiously while using his mirrors to monitor the area behind the vehicle.
The Scorpion truck is designed to protect highway workers by absorbing impacts from oncoming vehicles and is equipped with illuminated directional arrows and crash barrels used during freeway lane closures.
Authorities said the driver remained at the scene and is employed by the same construction company as the victim.
The victim was wearing high-visibility clothing and the required safety equipment at the time of the incident.
Houston Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly workplace accident.
