Massive Waves Flood Long Beach Peninsula

Powerful surf associated with Hurricane Marie battered the Long Beach Peninsula Sunday evening, flooding Ocean Boulevard and sending waves over the boardwalk seawall.

Around the 6 p.m. high tide on September 6, 2026, flooding was reported along Ocean Boulevard near 63rd, 64th and 65th places, extending from the center median toward the boardwalk.

Large waves and elevated swell repeatedly slammed into the seawall, sending water high into the air near beachfront homes. Sand and debris covered portions of the boardwalk as conditions deteriorated along the shoreline.

Parts of the boardwalk were also observed breaking away toward the ocean amid the powerful surf.

Lifeguards worked to keep people off the boardwalk, while police blocked vehicle traffic from entering portions of Ocean Boulevard on the Peninsula.

The conditions came as Southern California experienced elevated surf and coastal flooding associated with Hurricane Marie, which remained offshore.
