Springs Fire Grows Rapidly, Prompts Large Evacuations
At approximately 11:00 a.m. on April 3rd, 2026, Cal Fire Riverside County crews responded to a fast-moving brush fire in the 15000 block of Gilman Springs Road in Moreno Valley. The fire rapidly spread from an initial 5 acres to approximately 3,500 acres within hours, driven by dry conditions and wind.
By the evening hours, the fire had grown to over 4,100 acres, burning dangerously close to homes near Championship Drive and surrounding neighborhoods. Deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department went door-to-door issuing evacuation orders as flames approached residential areas. Video from the scene showed intense fire activity near large homes, with residents preparing to evacuate while attempting to protect their property.
Evacuation orders were issued for multiple zones across Moreno Valley, while additional areas remained under evacuation warnings. An evacuation shelter was established at Valley View High School, and animals were relocated to the San Jacinto Animal Shelter. Dozens of resources, including air tankers, helicopters, engines, and water tenders, were assigned to battle the blaze.
By April 4th, firefighters remained on scene conducting mop-up operations, addressing hot spots, and patrolling neighborhoods for flare-ups. Residents were allowed to return home, many finding ash and fire retardant residue covering their properties. One evacuated resident described the emotional evacuation, stating she ensured her father’s ashes were safely taken before leaving, while also praising firefighters for their efforts.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and no injuries were immediately reported.
