Fast-Moving Brush Fire Shuts Down Highway 60
A rapidly spreading vegetation fire prompted a major firefighting response and the full closure of westbound Highway 60 in Moreno Valley on June 27, 2026.
The fire was reported at approximately 2:15 p.m. near Gilman Springs Road. When Cal Fire/Riverside County crews arrived, they found an estimated three to four acres burning at a moderate rate of spread toward nearby structures.
As the fire quickly expanded, a full state response was ordered, bringing in additional ground crews, aircraft, and firefighting resources.
By approximately 7:00 p.m., the fire had grown to an estimated 600 acres. Fire officials reported that forward progress had been stopped and containment had reached approximately 27%.
Due to the fire’s proximity to the freeway, westbound Highway 60 was fully closed from Interstate 10 to the World Logistics Center in Moreno Valley for several hours to allow firefighters to safely conduct suppression operations.
Officials later announced that the westbound lanes of Highway 60 would reopen at approximately 8:00 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials noted that the final mapped acreage could change as crews continue assessing the burn area.
