Houston: Chinese Embassy Burns Papers After Being Expelled For Spying

07.21.2020 | 8:20 PM | HOUSTON – Chinese officials were burning documents at their Houston embassy after being expelled from the United States for spying, Tuesday night.

Authorities responded to reports of a fire burning at the Chinese Consulate General located in the 3400 block of Montrose Boulevard around 8:20 PM.

Units arriving on scene found smoke coming from the courtyard of the embassy building but were denied entry into the building.

Initial intelligence suggests the Chinese diplomats were burning documents after being ordered to close the embassy amid allegations of spying on US companies and stealing intellectual property.

Law enforcement and fire officials were remaining on scene to ensure the fire did not get out of hand.

The eviction of the diplomats was expected to take place on Friday around 4:00 PM.

No injuries or property damage was reported as a result of the fires.
