Wrong-Way Driver Pursuit Ends In PIT

According to the DPS Sergeant on scene :
- A trooper was assisting with a freeway closure on the I-10 eastbound near Baseline Road for construction around 4:35 a.m.
- The trooper witnessed a brown Kia Soul drive around him and through the closure into the work zone.
- The trooper pulled behind the suspect and activated his lights and sirens in an attempt to get the car to stop.
- The Kia exited at Baseline Road before entering back onto the I-10 from the exit ramp the wrong direction, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes.
- The trooper attempted to strike the vehicle to prevent it from going the wrong-way but was unsuccessful.
- The suspect made it onto the I-10 driving against traffic before self correcting shortly after.
- The car turned and exited Baseline Road where the trooper again tried to use his patrol car to stop the driver.
- The suspect then began driving wrong-way on Baseline Road, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel.
- Eventually the suspect drove to the northeast parking lot of the Arizona Mills Mall where the trooper performed a PIT maneuver and successfully disabled the car.
- The suspect bailed from the vehicle and a foot pursuit ensued.
- The trooper deployed his taser on the suspect causing him to fall to the ground.
- The suspect sustained injuries to his head from the impact.
- Tempe and Guadalupe Fire responded to the scene and evaluated the suspect before transporting him to a local hospital.
