Whittier: Tree Collapses On Wedding Party

12.17.2016 | 4:30 PM | WHITTIER – What was supposed to be a joyous wedding in a park ended in terror after a large tree collapsed on attendees, killing one and leaving at least five others injured.

Officials responded to Penn Park in Whittier just after 4:30 PM in response to numerous 911 calls reporting a tree down with people trapped underneath.

Fire and police officials arrived on scene shortly after and found several victims trapped under a large eucalyptus tree. Officials immediately initiated efforts to free the victims using chainsaws and other power tools to cut away at portions of the tree.

In the end, at least five people suffering from injuries related to the collapse were treated on scene before being transported to area hospitals. One victim succumbed to their injuries on scene and pronounced deceased.

Arborists were summoned to investigate the cause of the tree collapse.
