Whittier: Man Detonates Firework, Blows Off Hand
05.03.2020 | 11:09 PM | WHITTIER – A man lost his hand when he detonated a firework, late Sunday night.
Authorities responded to reports of an explosion followed by a man screaming for help in the 11500 block of Whittier Boulevard around 11:09 PM.
Units arriving on scene located a man with his hand blown to bits and a large amount of blood.
Firefighter paramedics transported the man to USC Medical Center with major hand trauma.
Initial reports from officers on scene indicate the man is a transient who may have discovered a firework and attempted to ignite it.
A dog was present at the time of the explosion and frightened but not injured.
Animal control responded to take custody of the dog while the man is hospitalized.
An unignited firework was discovered nearby and secured by officers.
An investigation into the circumstances of the explosion is ongoing.
