Vehicle Crashes Into Homeless Camp, 1 Dead 2 Injured

- Phoenix Police and Phoenix Fire crews responded to reports of a vehicle collision with a possible pedestrian trapped under an SUV at the intersection of 35th Avenue and Grand Avenue around 10:20 PM Wednesday night.
- Upon arrival, units located an SUV that had crashed into an apparent homeless encampment striking multiple people.
- Several additional units were requested to the scene to assist with a medical response assignment.
- UponĀ further investigation, firefighters found a male pedestrian pinned between the vehicle and a concrete pillar.
- Multiple officers and firefighters pushed the vehicle backwards by hand in order to access the crushed patient.
- According to officers on scene, the victim who was crushed by the SUV is an adult male and was pronounced deceased.
- A second victim, also an adult male, was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition.
- A third adult male in a wheelchair was evaluated by fire crews on scene for minor injuries. It is unknown if he was transported.
- It is unknown if the driver of the SUV remained on the scene.
- The intersection is closed in all directions, the Grand Avenue flyover bridge is not affected by the closure.
- The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours as Vehicular Crimes Unit detectives work the scene.
