Two Shot at Auto Shop Leaving One Dead

INCIDENT: Homicide Investigation
LOCATION: 13600 block of Quinnault Road, Apple Valley
On Friday, September 20, 2024, at approximately 4:04 p.m., deputies with the Apple Valley station were dispatched to an automotive repair center, at 13600 Quinnault Road, for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, deputies contacted Leon Sanchez who was armed with handgun. Sanchez was detained without incident. Deputies also located Frank Portillo and Joshua Augsburger, each suffering from gunshot wounds. Lifesaving measures were attempted on Portillo and Augsburger. Portillo was pronounced deceased at the scene and Augsburger was transported to a trauma center for treatment where he remains in critical condition.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, responded and assumed the investigation. Through the investigation, it was learned Portillo and Augsburger arrived at the location of occurrence and confronted Sanchez. During the argument witnesses heard Portillo threaten Sanchez. As the situation escalated Sanchez fired at Portillo and Augsburger, striking the two men. The investigation is ongoing. The case will be reviewed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
Sanchez was found to have a valid issued San Bernardino County Carry Concealed Firearm permit.
