Two Killed in Chemical Leak | La Porte
07.27.2021 | 7:35 PM | LA PORTE – There has been a mass casualty incident at a Lyondell-Basell Plant.
La Porte Fire & Ems along with other agencies throughout Harris County are responding to assist. There was some type of chemical leak that is believed to have killed two and injured several more.
Officials believe the leak has been isolated and does not pose a risk to the surrounding communities.
Methyl Iodide, Hydrogen Iodide & Methyl Aspartate are the chemicals that leaked in the facility.
All chemicals are used in food grade vinegar.
Exposure to these chemicals may cause severe burns, harmful if swallowed, toxic if inhaled, and can cause burns to the skin.
There are 2 confirmed dead, 31 are walking but being reviewed for symptoms, 5 are yellow and being treated at the scene, 2 are red one was taken to a hospital via life flight and another by ambulance.
Officials have been surveying the area to ensure there is no threat to the public
Several agencies including Harris County Hazmat will be making entry into the location to search for additional victims if any.. it is unclear if there is anyone missing inside of the plant
Commissioner Garcia & Judge Hidalgo has been notified of the incident.
HCFMO as well as Harris County Medical Examiner & Harris County Pollution Control will be handling this investigation.
