Two Firefighters Seriously Injured Battling Green Fire
Two firefighters were seriously injured overnight while battling the Green Fire burning in steep, rugged terrain near Yucaipa and Mountain Home Village.
The Green Fire was first reported around 6:00 p.m. on July 27, 2026, in the 9000 block of Highway 38. The vegetation fire quickly grew to more than 33 acres, prompting a second-alarm response as firefighters faced rapid fire spread through steep and inaccessible terrain.
The fire made powerful uphill runs, leading officials to request an evacuation warning for Mountain Home Village while the California Highway Patrol closed Highway 38.
Just after midnight on July 28, firefighters working to construct containment line on a cliffside reported a medical emergency after two firefighters were struck by a large rock that broke loose from above.
According to radio traffic, one firefighter suffered injuries to the abdomen while another sustained an ankle injury. Neither firefighter was able to walk off the mountainside.
Fire crews used two separate rescue litters to carry the injured firefighters down the steep hand line to waiting ambulances. Video from the scene showed one firefighter being transferred onto an ambulance gurney while the second was carried over firefighters’ shoulders before being transported by an Advanced Life Support ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Earlier in the evening, a third firefighter was also transported from the incident after suffering a heat-related illness.
Firefighters continue to battle the blaze in extremely hazardous conditions, with burning trees, rolling rocks, loose dirt, and falling debris creating constant dangers for crews working on the mountainside.
As of early Tuesday morning, the Green Fire remained approximately 34 acres and was being held along ridge tops. Highway 38 remained closed at Bryant Street as suppression efforts continued.
The investigation remains ongoing.
