INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 09/16/24 APPROX 6:40 AM
LOCATION: RHODES LAKE ROAD / FALLING WATER BLVD
AREA/CITY: BONNEY LAKE , WA
DETAILS:
- Two people were killed on Sunday near Bonney Lake when the driver of one pickup truck pursued another, leading to an exchange of gunfire, reportedly over a stolen trailer, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident culminated in a crash shortly before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Rhodes Lake Road East and Falling Water Boulevard East.
Police from multiple agencies responded to reports of gunfire and a collision at the scene. Two individuals fled from the vehicles—a white pickup and a gold pickup—and engaged in a shootout, said Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss Jr. in a video statement.
“Detectives have determined that the white truck stole a trailer from Prairie Ridge, and the gold truck pursued it,” Moss explained. “We believe gunfire was exchanged during the chase and at the crash site.”
One man from each vehicle was fatally shot, with one victim pronounced dead at the scene and the other found in the back seat of the white pickup, who later succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
“Orting and Sumner police managed to locate a potential suspect on a nearby road,” Moss reported, identifying him as the driver of the gold truck.
Authorities also apprehended a woman who fled from the white truck but were still searching for its driver, who may have sustained injuries from gunfire.
The Sheriff’s Department urged anyone with information to reach out via the P3 Tips app, tpcrimestoppers.com, or by calling 800-222-TIPS.
