Tustin: Massive Fire Rips Through Apartment Complex

02.12.2020 | 3:01 AM | TUSTIN – A massive five-alarm fire ripped through an apartment complex quickly causing a roof collapse and obliterating over 38 apartments, early Wednesday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of a structure fire at the Chatham Village Apartments located in the 15700 block of Williams Street near McFadden Avenue around 3:01 AM.

Units arriving on scene located a two-story apartment building engulfed in heavy fire and began an aggressive fire attack while working to evacuate residents.

Within 30 minutes of the firefight the building’s roof collapsed, complicating efforts to extinguish the blaze.

Over 120 firefighters were on scene as part of a fifth-alarm assignment to contain the flames.

By 8:30 AM over 62 residents had been accounted for but authorities are still working to determine if any more might be missing.

All 38 units of the apartment building were destroyed prompting and the American Red Cross was on scene to help displaced residents.

One civilian suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated on scene while another was taken to an area hospital.

Fire investigators are on scene working to determine the cause of the inferno.
