Tunnel Fire Shuts Down Roadway In San Pedro

At approximately 8:50 p.m. on May 4, 2026, firefighters responded to reports of heavy smoke coming from a tunnel near the northbound 110 Freeway just north of Harry Bridges Boulevard in San Pedro.

Responding crews discovered a fire inside a tunnel believed to contain a homeless encampment with heavy debris conditions.

Authorities had difficulty accessing the tunnel due to the conditions inside and deployed a robotic firefighting dozer to assist with operations.

Officials were unable to immediately determine if anyone was inside the tunnel at the time of the fire.

Road closures in the area left multiple drivers temporarily stranded before traffic was eventually allowed to clear.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

This package includes witness sound from a driver impacted by the closure.
