“Trump House” Owner Critically Wounded During Assault

At approximately 2:14 p.m. on May 20, 2026, officers responded to reports of an assault in progress near Buchanan Street and East Mission Avenue in Escondido.

Responding officers located an elderly man suffering from significant injuries while a utility worker and bystander attempted to assist the victim before paramedics arrived.

The victim was transported to a trauma center in critical condition and later listed in the ICU.

Authorities say the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived but was later located nearby and taken into custody without incident.

Investigators identified the suspect as 32 year-old Thomas Caleb Butler of Escondido, who was later booked on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police established a large crime scene at the residence, which is locally known by some residents as the “Trump House” due to political flags and signage displayed on the property.

The motive for the attack remains under investigation.
