Thousand Oaks: Man Opens Fire At Crowded Bar, Kills 12 Including Deputy
11.07.2018 | 11:20 PM | THOUSAND OAKS – A normally quiet community was in shock after a mass shooting left at least 13, including a deputy sheriff, dead at a popular country bar, late Wednesday night.
Officers responded at 11:20 PM to reports of a shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill located at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive in Thousand Oaks, California. Units responding heard additional gunfire from the location as they arrived on scene.
Determined to stop the to protect lives and stop the threat, Sergeant Ron Helus of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department along with a California Highway Patrol officer entered the location.
Upon entry, Sergeant Helus was struck by gunfire multiple times. The California Highway Patrol officer dragged Sergeant Helus to safety while calling for additional units.
Additional officers, including SWAT, arrived on scene while Sergeant Helus was transported by fellow officers to a nearby hospital.
Eventually, officers made entry to the bar and located at least 11 victims shot dead and numerous others in hiding. The suspect was discovered dead on scene from a gunshot wound.
Tragically, Sergeant Helus succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital. He was described as a veteran deputy of nearly 30-years and leaves behind both a wife and son.
Thus far, authorities have confirmed 13 dead, including Sergeant Helus and the suspect. Numerous other minor injuries were reported as a result of victims jumping through windows to escape.
Several witnesses reported seeing the shooter being dressed in all black with his face covered before entering and opening fire. Smoke bombs were also reportedly deployed during the attack.
Numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies have converged on the location to investigate the suspect and potential motives behind the attack.
