Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Into HPD Patrol Unit

At approximately 1:40 a.m. on July 2, 2026, Houston Police responded to a traffic collision involving one of their patrol vehicles at the intersection of Clay Road and Gessner Road.

According to investigators, the HPD patrol unit was traveling westbound on Clay Road while a civilian vehicle was traveling northbound on Gessner Road when the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

Preliminary information indicates the patrol vehicle may have had the green light, while the civilian driver allegedly ran a red light at a high rate of speed.

The police vehicle was not responding to an emergency call and was not operating with lights or sirens at the time of the collision.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The civilian driver was detained at the scene and was being evaluated for possible driving under the influence. Video from the scene showed officers conducting the investigation following the crash.

Police also stated the driver has a prior criminal history but no previous DWI convictions.

The Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division is continuing to investigate the collision.
