Suspect Killed, Officer Injured in Shooting

LONG BEACH – A man with a gun was fatally shot after exchanging
gunfire with four Long Beach Police Department officers today in Long Beach.
Officers responded to the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue regarding a
man with a gun at approximately 3:15 p.m., police said. When they arrived,
officers found a man who matched the description of the subject described in
the initial call.
They attempted to deescalate the situation and called in additional
resources, including a hostage negotiator and a Mental Evaluation Team, but the
suspect remained uncooperative, according to police. A SWAT team was then
dispatched to the scene.
According to police, after over two and half hours of de-escalation
attempts, the suspect a drew a firearm and a shootout occurred between the
suspect and the four officers.
Officers immediately rendered aid to the suspect, who sustained
multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Paramedics from Long Beach Fire
Department arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene. One officer was struck in the
arm and taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
The officers were equipped with body-worn cameras and the department
is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make it available to the
public as soon as possible, police said.
As with all officer-involved shooting incidents, the department will
conduct a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident, police said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office will conduct an independent
investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer-involved shootings
that result in injury or death.
