Suspect In Custody After Driving Wrong Way During Pursuit

DETAILS:
- According to the DPS Sergeant on scene, Troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a silver chevy sedan traveling south on I-17 near milepost 205.
- The vehicle refused to yield and a pursuit was initiated.
- Troopers requested assistance from the Phoenix Police air unit.
- The air unit responded and was overhead moments later.
- The driver continued southbound on I-17 and exited the mainline at Camelback Road.
- The driver then turned around on the offramp and began driving northbound on the southbound I-17 frontage road from Camelback Road.
- The driver then entered the I-17 mainline at Bethany Home Road and began driving northbound in the southbound travel lanes of I-17.
- The suspect then exited the mainline at Glendale Ave and began traveling south on the southbound frontage road from Glendale Ave.
- The driver then entered an apartment complex parking lot just South of Glendale Ave on the I-17 frontage.
- The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
- Troopers and Phoenix Police ground units quickly established a perimeter around the suspects last known location.
- Minutes later the suspect was located by Troopers hiding near a dumpster in an apartment complex South of the vehicle’s location.
- Troopers issued commands and the suspect was taken into custody at gunpoint without further incident.
- The suspect will be booked on multiple charges including unlawful flight
- Impairment is suspected but can not be confirmed until further tests have been completed.
- If impairment is confirmed additional aggravated DUI charges will be filed.
