Suspect Found Dead After Five Hour Standoff | Beverly Hills

11.27.2021 | 11:15 PM | BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) – A motorist found unresponsive after a more than five-hour standoff with police at a busy Beverly Hills intersection was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to media reports.

Beverly Hills police officers, a SWAT team and a bomb squad surrounded a white van at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive at 6:10 p.m., according to a police dispatcher. A drone was also used during the standoff.

A statement from the Beverly Hills Police Department said preliminary information indicated  the department “received phone calls of a van causing a traffic hazard somewhere in the area of Wilshire and Spalding. When police units attempted to contact the driver of the van, it drove off and eventually came to a stop within the intersection of Wilshire and Rodeo.”

CBS2 reported that around 11:30 p.m., police removed an unresponsive body from the vehicle. Efforts to resuscitate the person were not successful, a videographer at the scene said.

Police could not confirm the number of occupants in the van, saying the windows were “covered with what appears to be aluminum paper.”

Wilshire was closed between Beverly and Camden drives during the standoff.
