Suspect Dead After Shooting Officer

According to Tempe Police spokesperson Jessica Ells:

Officers with Tempe Police’s action team were on patrol in the area of Baseline Road and Rural Road.

Officers recognized a man in a vehicle with an outstanding warrant at the Circle K gas station on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The officers began to approach the vehicle to make contact with the suspect when he fled in his vehicle.

Officers followed the suspect as he drove across Rural Road onto Lamplighter Lane.

The suspect stopped his vehicle and exited before fleeing on foot East on Lamplighter Lane.

An officer exited his patrol vehicle after the suspect when the suspect pulled a gun and shot the officer in the leg.

Officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect.

The officer was rushed to the hospital in stable condition.
