Suspect Arrested After 2 Hour Standoff in Creek
INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 1:30 PM
LOCATION: East Third Ave and 101
AREA/CITY: San Mateo
DETAILS:
- Police responded to a reported theft at Walgreens in downtown San Mateo
- Upon arrival, officers located a suspect who fled officers.
- A downtown bicycle officer pursued the suspect until he ran into a creek and through the tunnel under 101 near Third Avenue.
- The suspect hid in the tunnel and refused to exit. Officers deployed a drone and pepper balls into the tunnel in an attempt to get the suspect to exit.
- A water rescue team was requested to bring paddle boards to assist.
- Officers then deployed a canine and made more announcements before the suspect finally came out and was taken into custody without further incident. The standoff concluded at approximately 3:30 PM.
