Authorities responded to reports of a brush fire burning near the SR-118 Freeway and Madera Road around 6:09 AM.
Units arriving on scene found a fast-moving fire burning in heavy winds. Winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour hampered firefighting efforts and caused the fire to explode to more than 1,300 acres as of 10:00 AM.
No containment was reported and at least one home burned in the blaze.
Another 7,000 homes were threatened and under mandatory evacuation orders.
The fire appears suspicious in nature and arson investigators are on scene interviewing residents of a transient encampment near the ignition site of the fire.
