Authorities responded to reports of a plane down on the airfield at Santa Barbara Airport (KSBA) around 10:30 PM.
Units arriving on scene found a Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport down on its belly within the airfield.
Initial reports from the Federal Aviation Administration indicate that the aircraft had just departed Santa Maria Airport en route to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport when it suffered from unspecified hydraulic issues.
The aircraft’s seven-person crew declared an emergency and diverted to Santa Barbara Airport around 10:30 to attempt an emergency landing.
During the landing, the large aircraft skidded off the runway into an infield area. The crew was uninjured.
All flights at the Santa Barbara Airport were closed while crews worked to remove the aircraft from the airfield.
