Santa Ana: Jet Bridge Tire Explodes Killing Airport Worker
02.19.2019 | 11:26 PM | SANTA ANA – A man was killed by an exploding tire in a freak accident at the John Wayne Airport, Tuesday night.
Officials responded to a reported explosion near Gate Three next to a Delta Airlines aircraft around 11:30 PM.
Crews arriving on scene discovered that a tire attached to a jet bridge used for planing/deplaning had exploded. A nearby worker was fatally injured as a result of the explosion.
The force of the explosion set off alarms and fire sprinklers which prompted fears of a possible explosive device that were determined to be unfounded.
Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department along with CalOSHA were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
