Authorities responded to the two-vehicle crash on the northbound I-101 near the Trimble off ramp around 10:45 PM.
Units arriving on scene found the crash with one person who had apparently been ejected from a vehicle.
Firefighter paramedics pronounced the ejected individual deceased on scene and worked to treat three other victims who were injured in the crash.
All three victims were eventually transported to area hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Reports from the scene indicate that a white Honda was stopped on the shoulder of the freeway due to a mechanical issue when it was struck by a Ford Mustang.
The driver of the mustang, described as male in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and manslaughter.
