San Diego: Major Fire On USS Bonhomme Richard Injures 20+

07.12.2020 | 8:51 AM | SAN DIEGO – More than 20 people were injured after a massive fire broke out aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, Sunday morning.

The fire was reported on the USS Bonhomme Richard that was docked at Naval Base San Diego located in the 3400 block of Senn Street around 8:51 AM.

Units arriving on scene located the amphibious military assault ship with heavy smoke showing and began dousing the blaze with water while working to evacuate all 160 sailors.

At one point an explosion occurred prompting additional firefighter paramedics to respond to the scene.

At least 17 servicemembers and four civilians were injured in the fire but all were reported to have suffered from only minor injuries.

The rest of the crew aboard the ship was accounted for.

Over 150 firefighters from various agencies are on scene working to battle the fire.

The USS Fitzgerald was moved from its berth away from the fire while emergency efforts were underway.

At the time the fire broke out the USS Bonhomme Richard was reportedly undergoing routine maintenance.
