San Diego: High Winds Complicate Trash Truck Fire
11.14.2018 | 9:45 AM | SAN DIEGO – High winds complicated a trash truck fire in the Decanso area of San Diego, Wednesday morning.
Firefighters responded to reports of a trash truck with smoke showing on the southbound I-8 north of Japatul Road around 9:45 AM.
Units arriving in the area discovered the truck had exited the freeway to a nearby Park & Ride lot in the 2000 block of Japatul Road. Firefighters observed heavy smoke emanating from the truck’s payload.
Due to heavy winds and nearby it was not feasible to dump the load before attacking the flames. Instead firefighters used power tools to cut holes in the trash truck and then pumped water inside.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes, preventing flames from spreading to nearby vegetation.
