San Bernardino: Officer Dead After Crashing Into Tree
11.02.2019 | 12:16 AM | SAN BERNARDINO – A police officer was dead after crashing into a tree while in an unmarked vehicle, early Saturday morning.
Authorities responded to reports of a single vehicle traffic collision with a person possibly trapped inside near the intersection of North University Parkway and West Kendall Drive around 12:16 AM.
Units arriving on scene located a vehicle that had collided with a tree trapping the solo occupant inside.
Firefighters used the jaws of life and other power tools to extricate the solo occupant within 15 minutes.
The occupant, later identified as a police officer, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Sources on scene reported that the officer was working undercover or plainclothes for the Ontario Police Department when the crash occurred.
A witness who was standing outside her apartment when the crash happened said she observed the vehicle traveling at a high-rate of speed prior to impacting the tree.
All lanes of University Parkway between Kendall Drive and College Avenue are closed while officials investigate.
