Riverside: Procession Transports Fallen Marine
08.25.2020 | 4:00 PM | RIVERSIDE – A procession transported the remains of a marine who lost his life when an amphibious assault vehicle sank, Tuesday evening.
The remains of U.S. Marine Corporal Cesar A. Villanueva, 21 of Riverside, were flown to Ontario International Airport and then transported to the Pierce Brother Crestlawn Mortuary around 4:00 PM.
Groups of citizens and first responders stopped tp pay their respects to the marine who lost his life along with eight others when an amphibious assault vehicle save during a training exercise near San Clemente Island.
All of the service members lost in the tragic incident were recovered and identified. Their names follow.
- Pfc. Bryan J. Baltierra, 18, of Corona;
- Lance Cpl. Marco A. Barranco, 21, of Montebello;
- Pfc. Evan A. Bath, 19, of Oak Creek, Wisconsin;
- Christopher Gnem, 22, of Stockton, a Navy hospital corpsman 3rd class;
- Pfc. Jack-Ryan Ostrovsky, 20, of Bend, Oregon;
- Cpl. Wesley A. Rodd, 22, of Harris, Texas;
- Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, of Portland, Oregon; and
- Cpl. Cesar A. Villanueva, 21, of Riverside.
- Lance Cpl. Guillermo S. Perez, 19, of New Braunfels, Texas.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
