Riverside: Driver Dies After Vehicle Overturns Onto Hydrant, Car Fills With Water

02.21.2020 | 2:36 AM | RIVERSIDE – A driver was dead after the vehicle he was traveling in lost control and overturned onto a fire hydrant causing the vehicle to fill with water, Friday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of a traffic collision involving an overturned vehicle that had sheared a fire hydrant near the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Victoria Avenue around 2:36 AM.

Units arriving on scene located a vehicle overturned on a sheared fire hydrant with water shooting from the windows of the car.

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to access the hydrant inside the vehicle and shut off the flow of water.

A deceased victim was also located inside the vehicle but it was unclear if they died from injuries sustained in the crash or drowned from the flow of water inside their vehicle.

The cause of the crash and subsequent death remains under investigation.
