Rappelling 26 Stories to Support United Way of Greater Houston
Supporters of the United Way of Greater Houston took a dramatic leap for charity on Friday, Nov. 14, 2025, rappelling down the side of the 26-story DoubleTree Hotel Galleria in a bold effort to raise money for the organization’s programs that help struggling families achieve financial stability.
Participants in the event, called “Rappel for a Reason,” each raised at least $1,500 to secure a spot on the ropes before stepping over the edge of the high-rise. The fundraiser benefited United Way initiatives that provide access to safe housing, affordable childcare, education, and job training.
Crowds gathered below throughout the day to cheer on the rappelers. For those who preferred to keep both feet on the ground, an all-day street-level celebration included music, food, and donation opportunities. Supporters who could not attend in person were encouraged to contribute online.
United Way President and CEO Amanda McMillian delivered remarks at 10:30 a.m., highlighting the importance of community support for families working to move from “surviving to thriving.”
Interviews were also available with Dr. Angel Harris, the organization’s vice president and chief advancement officer, along with several participating rappelers.
United Way of Greater Houston continues to invest in programs focused on financial stability, youth opportunity, healthy communities, and long-term community resilience. The organization also operates the 211 Texas/United Way HELPLINE, offering year-round access to critical services for residents in need.
The event was held at the DoubleTree Hotel Galleria, located at 5353 Westheimer Road in Houston.
