Rail Theft Suspects Lead CHP On Lengthy Pursuit Into Mountains
Five suspects escaped into a wooded area near Crestline early Thursday morning following a lengthy CHP pursuit involving a vehicle reportedly wanted in connection with multiple railroad thefts.
Around midnight on October 8, 2026, CHP received information from BNSF Railway Police regarding a vehicle they had been tracking in connection with several rail thefts over the past couple of months. Preliminary reports also indicated the occupants may have previously fired shots at railway police, although that information had not been confirmed.
Authorities tracked the vehicle from Redlands along the 10 Freeway toward Fontana before it traveled back toward Colton. Officers eventually located the vehicle on Agua Mansa Road and attempted a felony traffic stop.
During the stop, the suspects fled in the vehicle, leading officers on a pursuit through Riverside County and back into San Bernardino County before heading up the Cajon Pass.
The pursuit continued onto Highway 138 toward Crestline, where officers eventually stopped the vehicle. Five suspects reportedly exited and fled on foot into the surrounding forest.
San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies responded with a tracking K9 to assist in searching the wooded terrain.
Despite the search, none of the five suspects were located.
Authorities did not immediately release descriptions of the suspects or additional information regarding the alleged railroad thefts. The investigation remains ongoing.
