Propane Tanks Explode During Massive Fire

DETAILS:

  1. Shortly before 5 PM Thursday afternoon, Phoenix Fire responded to a large fire at a propane facility near Sky Harbor airport.
  2. Crews arrived and found several heavily involved propane tanks exploding, sending flames into a nearby full parking lot.
  3. Firefighters began a defensive strategy and fought the fire from a safe distance using aerial ladders.
  4. The fire spread and grew rapidly into a neighboring building as propane canisters continued to explode.
  5. The heavy black smoke pouring from the fire caused Sky Harbor to close one of its runways.
  6. Eventually a large tanker ruptured, spewing a column of fire into the air.
  7. The fire was balanced to a third alarm as crews battled the blaze in 110+ degree heat.
  8. The fire began spreading East towards an animal shelter causing the shelter to be evacuated.
  9. At this time it is unknown if anyone was hurt during the fire.
