Powerful Waves Damage Homes And Boardwalk In Long Beach

Powerful waves battered the Long Beach Peninsula Friday morning, damaging waterfront homes and sections of the boardwalk as high tides brought additional coastal flooding.

On October 9, 2026, around 8:30 a.m., waves crashed over the seawall near the 6400 block of East Seaside Walk, sending water toward East Ocean Boulevard.

Video showed damaged sections of the boardwalk, floating debris and waves washing beneath homes. Portions of protective sand berms built after previous storms were also washed away.

City inspectors had identified four damaged structures in the area, including two red-tagged buildings deemed unsafe and two yellow-tagged buildings with restricted access.

With Tropical Storm Rachel approaching, forecasters warned of worsening conditions through the weekend, including surf potentially reaching 6 to 9 feet Sunday.

High tides approaching 7 feet, strong winds and large waves were expected to increase the risk of flooding and further beach erosion.

A coastal flood advisory remained in effect through Tuesday afternoon as officials monitored the vulnerable shoreline.
