Powerful Waves Batter Long Beach Peninsula As Storm Approaches

Powerful waves continued battering the Long Beach Peninsula Saturday night as residents braced for even more dangerous surf and coastal flooding associated with Tropical Storm Rachel.

On October 10, 2026, around 10 p.m., large waves were crashing along the shoreline near Ocean Boulevard and 64th Place, where previous high tides had already caused significant damage to homes and portions of the boardwalk.

Video captured waves pounding the damaged coastline, including two teenagers who were seen fleeing from powerful surf after entering a closed section of the boardwalk.

Long Beach police restricted access to the affected area, allowing only residents to enter as dangerous conditions continued. Public works crews were observed in the area earlier in the evening but had departed by approximately 11 p.m.

According to city officials, eight structures across 13 addresses had been red-tagged and deemed unsafe to occupy, while another structure was yellow-tagged due to safety concerns.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for homes in the 6400 and 6500 blocks of Seaside Walk. Additional evacuation warnings were in effect for portions of 64th, 65th and 66th places, along with several other blocks of Seaside Walk.

Residents throughout the Peninsula, Naples Island and Treasure Island were also under an evacuation advisory.

The National Weather Service issued coastal flood warnings and high surf advisories as waves of 4 to 7 feet were expected, along with strong rip currents and significant beach erosion.

High tides exceeding 7.5 feet were forecast for Sunday, raising concerns that the already damaged shoreline could experience additional flooding and structural damage.

City officials urged the public to avoid the affected Peninsula area, stay away from the shoreline and keep off protective sand berms constructed to shield nearby homes.

The dangerous conditions also forced organizers of the Long Beach Marathon to modify approximately 1.5 miles of Sunday’s racecourse.
