Port Neches: TPC Plant Explosion Injures Workers, Evacuates Nearby Towns

11.27.2019 | 1:00 AM | PORT NECHES – Several massive explosions at a TPC Group chemical plant left three workers injured and four towns evacuated, early Wednesday morning.

Authorities responded to an explosion with fire at the TPC Group Neches Operation plant located in the 2100 block of TX-136 Spur around 1:00 AM.

Units arriving on scene located a massive fire burning within the plant complex and began efforts to evacuate nearby areas.

All homes and businesses within a 4-mile radius of plant in four different townships were under mandatory evacuation orders as a result of the explosion and subsequent fire.

Initial reports indicate that at least three tanks at the chemical plant are burning a hazardous chemical called butadiene.

Three workers were injured in the blast and transported to area hospitals in fair condition.

It is unknown how long the fire will burn as authorities cannot directly attack the flames.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
