Pico Rivera: Girl Killed, Brother Injured During Carjacking Amid Crime Spree

07.05.2020 | 2:10 PM | PICO RIVERA – A 13-year-old girl was killed and her 8-year-old brother was seriously injured during by a suspect committing a crime spree while out on bail due to COVID-19, Sunday evening.

Authorities responded to the carjacking outside the La Mano Tortilleria located in the 9200 block of Whittier Boulevard around 2:10 PM.

Deputies arriving on scene learned a 13-year-old girl and her three siblings, an 8-year-old brother, 11-year-old brother and 18-year-old sister, were waiting inside a parked vehicle while their parents were inside getting food.

While waiting in the vehicle a suspect later identified as 26-year-old Jose Elias Aguilar of Los Angeles, got into the driver’s seat and ordered the children out.

Before the siblings could exit the vehicle Aguilar sped off at a high-rate of speed. The 11-year-old brother and 18-year-old sister safely jumped from the vehicle and sustained only minor injuries.

Tragically the 13-year-old girl was ejected as the vehicle sped off and struck a fixed object. She was pronounced deceased on scene.

The 8-year-old boy was also ejected and sustained major injuries.

Aguilar continued fleeing before he crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Whittier and Rosemead boulevards and fled on foot into the Whittier-Narrows Recreation Area.

The suspect then carjacked another vehicle with children inside before crashing into a bridge about 100-feet away.

Street vendors witnessing the chaos ran to the scene and detained Aguilar until deputies arrived and took him into custody.

Aguilar is on probation and was recently arrested for vandalism and possession of a dirk or dagger.

Due to the zero-bail schedule implemented as a result of COVID-19, Aguilar was released.

He is now jailed on suspicion of murder, carjacking, and kidnapping among other charges.
