Pickup Strikes Stalled Vehicle Killing Both Occupants

San Diego, CA – On Saturday, March 16, 2024, at approximately 2:43 a.m.,
California Highway Patrol (CHP) San Diego Area units were dispatched to a call of a
Crash on Interstate 15 (I-15) northbound near Miramar Way.
Based on preliminary investigation, a Honda Civic driven by 25-year-old Esteban
Coronado from Escondido was driving on I-15 northbound, north of Miramar Way
when the Honda struck the rear of a Toyota 4-Runner driven by a male from San
Diego. The Honda became disabled within the traffic lanes when it was struck by a
Chevrolet Colorado, driven by 22-year-old Joseph Michael Martin from Sun City.
Two passengers from the Honda sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced
deceased on scene. Esteban Coronado and Michael Martin were determined to be
under the influence of alcohol/and or drugs and were arrested and booked into San
Diego County Jail.
Northbound lanes were closed for approximately three and a half hours to facilitate
the investigation. Traffic was diverted to the I-15 northbound, High Occupancy
Vehicle lanes.
