Pickup Falls 30 Feet After Crashing Into Dry Canal

DETAILS:

  1. Fire crews responded to reports of a vehicle collision in a residential neighborhood.
  2. A Glendale Fire crews responded and located a pickup truck that crashed through a guardrail and then through an iron fence before falling 30 feet into a flood diversion channel.
  3. The assignment was quickly upgraded to a technical rescue operation drawing in several additional resources from the cities of Phoenix and Glendale.
  4. Firefighters coordinated with Phoenix Police and devised a rescue plan.
  5. Phoenix Police officers were able to access the spillway with their patrol vehicles via a nearby maintenance entrance.
  6. Fire crews provided the officers with first aid equipment to stabilize the male driver.
  7. the driver was found laying on the ground near the heavily damaged truck.
  8. Officers provided aid and stabilized the driver before loading him into a patrol vehicle.
  9. Officers extracted the driver from the spillway in the patrol vehicle and rendezvoused with nearby fire crews outside of the spillway.
  10. The driver was transferred from the patrol vehicle and into an ambulance.
  11. The driver was transported to a local trauma center with serious injuries.
  12. Phoenix Police remained on scene to investigate the collision.
