Phoenix SAU Arrests High Speed Driver After It Flees From Officers

  • According to Phoenix Police and DPS radio traffic:
  • Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black Toyota Camry near the I-17 on Thunderbird Road.
  • The initial reason for the stop is unconfirmed.
  • The Camry refused to yield and fled southbound onto I-17.
  • A pursuit was not initiated however a “Tactical Surveillance Operation” was quickly authorized.
  • Phoenix Police Tactical Support Bureau and Special Assignments Units (SWAT) followed the vehicle at a distance while the air unit tracked from above.
  • The air unit followed the speeding Camry south on I-17 for several miles.
  • The Camry eventually exited the 17 at McDowell Road, making a westbound turn.
  • The vehicle then came to a stop outside an ARCO gas station at the intersection of 27th Avenue and McDowell Road.
  • The driver exited the vehicle and began walking towards the entrance of the gas station.
  • Special Assignments Units quickly converged on the gas station, taking the suspect into custody without further incident.
