Pepper Balls Fly As Suspects Flee From Surrounded Stolen Hyundai

• Phoenix Police officers located 2 males asleep inside a stolen Hyundai Sonata parked in an apartment complex parking lot located near the 2200 block of West Campbell Avenue shortly after 1:00 AM.

• Officers requested additional resources to the scene and quickly surrounded the vehicle.

• Officers issued commands to the occupants, ordering them out of the vehicle.

• The driver began to comply but repeatedly ignored commands to keep his hands in the air.

• After reaching inside the vehicle several times, officers deployed a volley of pepper balls into the driver door.

• The passenger then exited the vehicle and fled on foot, jumping a wall directly behind the vehicle.

• The driver continued to disobey commands and started reaching around inside the vehicle once more.

• Another volley of pepper balls were deployed and the driver then exited the vehicle.

• As the driver exited with his hands up, he quickly turned away from officers and jumped the wall behind the vehicle, fleeing on foot while armed with a handgun.

• Officers gave chase and surrounded a residential property where the suspect was observed running through.

• Minutes later, officers located the driver and quickly took him into custody.

• It is unknown if the passenger was apprehended.

• Officers searched the area near where the suspect was taken into custody and located a handgun.
