Palo Alto: Police Chase Self-Driving Tesla With Passed Out Driver

11.30.2018 | 3:45 AM | PALO ALTO – A self-driving Tesla with a DUI driver asleep behind the wheel had to be forcibly stopped by officers, Friday morning.

Officers observed a grey Tesla Model S traveling southbound on the I-101 shortly after 3:30 PM.

Units attempted to conduct a traffic stop however the vehicle failed to yield, leading officers on a pursuit.

During the pursuit officers were able to observe the apparent driver behind asleep behind the wheel and initiated efforts to stop the vehicle.

With multiple units on scene, officers boxed the vehicle in forcing it to reduce it’s speed before the driver woke up.

The vehicle eventually yielded and administered field sobriety tests on the driver before determining he was under the influence.

The man was arrested and expected to be booked in suspicion of DUI.

No injuries occurred as a result of the pursuit.
