Orange: Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting (Caught On Camera)
03.12.2017 | 12:30 AM | ORANGE – A man was fatally wounded during an officer-involved shooting that culminated a lengthy stand-off, early Monday morning.
Shortly before 12:30 AM, officer initiated a traffic stop on a white van in the 100 block of Katella Avenue. A records query of the van’s license plate revealed the registered owner had an outstanding warrant.
Additional units were requested when, subsequently, the driver produced a gas can and proceeded to light a cigarette. Concerned the driver might light himself on fire, officer requested the assistance of the Orange Fire Department.
Officers then approached the vehicle while the driver was distracted and broke the passenger-side window before dousing the man with a fire hose. Still, the man refused to exit the vehicle and resisted at which point additional officers moved in and attempted to pull him out.
During this struggle officer’s are heard yelling “knife” before opening fire. The suspect was struck twice.
Paramedics immediately tended to the man and transported him to an area hospital in grave condition.
The man later succumbed to his injuries.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
