Off-Duty Officer Shoots During Attempted Robbery
A major investigation is underway after an off-duty Long Beach police officer was involved in a shooting during an apparent attempted robbery Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 1:35 p.m. on July 12, 2026, officers responded to the area of Orange Avenue and East Armando Drive following reports of an officer-involved shooting.
According to preliminary information, an off-duty Long Beach police officer reported that three Black male suspects, believed to be between 18 and 20 years old, attempted to rob him.
During the confrontation, the off-duty officer fired multiple rounds.
Investigators believe the suspects fled the area in a black Mercedes-Benz SUV, which was last seen traveling southbound with what appeared to be a shattered rear windshield, possibly from the gunfire.
The off-duty officer was not injured during the incident.
Numerous Long Beach Police detectives responded to the scene to process evidence and interview witnesses. A large section of Orange Avenue remained closed between Bixby Road and East Carson Street for several hours as the investigation continued.
Police have not announced whether any suspects were struck by gunfire or taken into custody.
The investigation remains ongoing.
