Oakland Firefighter Drowns in the Ocean

DETAILS:
- The victim was on vacation with his family with several Oakland Firefighters when he entered the ocean off of Crystal Pier when the nearby bars had closed down.
- A 911 call was made when the group could no longer see the victim.
- A search was conducted by an SDPD officer and City Lifeguards.
- The victim was found a short distance north of the Pier facedown in the sand and was declared deceased at the scene.
- The victim was a former U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and a current Firefighter with the Oakland Fire Dept.
- Alcohol may be a factor.
The SDPD and SDFD escorted the Medical Examiner’s van with the firefighter onboard to the SD County Medical Examiner’s office. We now have SOTs with confirmation of the victim being an Oakland Firefighter. It’s believed that he was caught in a rip tide.
The victim was identified as 25-year-old Caeden Laffen.
