Mission Viejo: DUI Crash Into Big Rig Results in Major Injuries
11.16.2018 | 2:15 AM | MISSION VIEJO – A person was hospitalized in critical condition while another was under arrest after a suspected DUI crash involving a big rig, early Friday morning.
Police and fire responded to reports of a traffic collision involving big rig on the southbound I-5 Freeway at Oso Parkway shortly after 2:00 AM.
Units arriving on scene located a blue Toyota Corolla sedan occupied by five occupants that had slammed into the rear of a big rig at high speeds. Three of the five occupants inside the sedan were pinned, requiring extrication.
Firefighters quickly initiated a rescue using the jaws of life and other power tools. Within 30 minutes, all victims were extricated from the vehicle.
Paramedics treated all patients on scene before transporting at least four to area trauma centers. At least one of the victims was described by authorities as suffering from critical injuries.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol’s Capistrano Office determined the driver of the sedan, a 21-year-old male from Oceanside, CA, was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and placed him under arrest.
The driver of the big rig, a Kenworth tractor, suffered only minor injuries and was treated on scene.
